Benign Ovarian Cyst
There are many different types of ovarian cysts. An ovarian cyst is found inside the ovary in a separate sac or pouch, and it is filled with fluid. If there is only fluid in the cyst, it is called a simple cyst. If there is blood or other material in the cyst, it is called complex. These types of cysts can be distinguished using ultrasound.
In most instances, simple ovarian cysts are functional; that is, a normal side effect of ovulation. A dermoid cyst is another type of common benign cyst but is complex, with tissue within. It develops from embryotic tissue and there is a range of tissue types within it. Other complex cysts include cystadenomas and endometriomas. They develop from cells on the outside of the surface of the ovaries and all of them are benign.
At times complex cysts will require surgical removal. Most of the time, the surgery is done by laparoscopy, a minimally-invasive procedure in which a microscope device introduced through a small incision underneath the navel. If complex cysts are small and not painful, another option is watchful waiting. All of these options will be discussed during your consultation.
